Drama Review: Cheongdam-dong Alice Episode 14

Cheongdam-dong Alice
Episode 14

Finally episode 14!!! I am caught up.  Seung Jo’s reaction was a total surprise to me.  Like I said before, I was expecting something else, like a super crazy cussing and bad-mouthing.  But nothing like that except in this episode he told her he’s going to kill her if she says one more word about the lie.   In this episode, it’s the men’s turn to do the talking.  The confrontations among the girls were all done by their eyes.  Ironically, they were fiercer than their words! And the drama, amazing!

Just like what Dong Wook said, Seung Jo didn’t acknowledge reality.  He saw the two women in the video, Yoon Joo and Se Kyung, as two people that resemble people he knows.  In Hwa was puzzled.  She looked like she felt almost stupid for even showing the video considering the reaction she got from the recipient.  Seung Jo left the conference room like nothing bad happened.  On the contrary, when he got into his office, he seemed to know exactly what happened there; exactly what he saw but how he would deal with it is yet to known.   Meanwhile, Dong Wook shared more about Seung Jo’s condition, when he was in Paris, to Se Kyung; how he suddenly disappeared and how he lost his sanity for a year.  He added that if this is to happen to Seung Jo again, he will be like a ticking bomb.  You won’t know when and where he will explode.

Tommy Hong’s spy in Seung Jo’s office updated him about Seung Jo.  He was told that Seung Jo finished the meeting and left his office in good mood.  He and Yoon Joo weren’t expecting such news.  Yoon Joo decided to visit In Hwa in her office to make sure whether she showed him the video or not.   She got her confirmation and updated Tommy right away.

Concurrently, Seung Jo invited Se Kyung to his house.  They had dinner and wine.  She didn’t notice any changes in him so it didn’t occur to her that he already knew about her secret until Tommy told her in a phone call.  She was in awe!  Good thing, she was in the bathroom when she answered the call.   Everything that Dong Wook told her and how Seung Jo welcomed her came rushing into her memory.   There goes the bitter realization of her “ugly love”.  This is frustrating!  If she would have told him that same moment when he was confessing to her his social status and who he really is, then things wouldn’t have been this bad.

She came out to go back to Seung Jo.  He was busy opening up another bottle of wine.  She looked at him with so much regret in her eyes.  The guilt is written all over her face.   She was about to cry but she held it.  She kept her composure; her calm.  This is not the time to be showing tears.  She has to be stronger.  This is her choice, she has to eat it!

On the other hand, Tommy Hong was really worried about her safety being with Seung Jo at this time.  He was expecting Seung Jo to be cussing and be at rage.  When he realized that nothing like that happened or will happen, he wondered if Seung Jo is trying to burry everything—like nothing ever happened.  Yoon Joo just told him that it was Se Kyung’s choice.  Where she is at or what she’s doing, is her choice.

Seung Jo fell asleep while sitting.  Se Kyung looked at her with so much love and guilt.  It was almost like she wanted to embrace him, say sorry but she couldn’t.  Maybe she doesn’t want him to know that she knew now because she doesn’t want to remind him.  It was painful to watch.  She liberated her tears then.  It was the perfect moment because he won’t see.  But just like she decided to do; just like she promised to his father but most of all to Seung Jo, she’s not going anywhere.

Seung Jo woke up and the first thing in his mind was the video of Se Kyung and Yoon Joo that In Hwa showed him.  He didn’t look like he was trying to avoid reality, if you asked me.  He looked to me like he knew what he saw but he’s hiding how he truly feels because he loves Se Kyung more than himself.

When he walked to the living room, he saw Se Kyung preparing breakfast.  She told him that she stayed overnight in the living room.  During breakfast she told him that it is alright if he shows his not so good side sometimes.  He doesn’t always have to be the prince.  She was almost trying to make him get angry that way he’s not keeping everything inside.  She was very subtly encouraging him to free his emotions.  If he’s mad, be mad.  Despite the effort she got nothing but a calm Seung Jo with a smile always ready for her.   Then he told her that he has something to show her.

Part of the reason why I believe he knew everything was real is because I see some changes in his behavior.  Normally he would be the excited, jumpy Seung Jo especially when he’s with her.  Like, he would lift her up or give her a peck on the lips but he wasn’t like that anymore.  I just couldn’t believe she didn’t even notice that when she first entered his house.

On the way to whatever Seung Jo wanted to show her, they were both quiet in the car.  He took her to a church.  He invited her to practice walking in the isle.  As they were walking he was telling her where their important guests will be standing—Secretary Moon and driver Kim, Dong Wook, her best friend Ah Jung, her sister, her dad and mom and his dad who she imagine to have given smile to Seung Jo but a serious face and a sigh to her.

They also practiced saying their “I Do’s”.  When they were practicing the part when the priest asked if there are any objections, Se Kyung tried to tell him about her lie.  Just right after she mentioned the word lie, he told her to stop; that if she says anymore, he would kill her.  She was aghast.  Suddenly the beautiful imagery of the wedding that they were just imagining was replaced by the cold, almost frightening aura.  Seung Jo was totally aware of the lies, the betrayal, but he’s determined to not change anything and he seemed determined to end the life of whoever dares to do otherwise.  That was scary and creepy at the same time.  Then again, the lesson here is, you don’t cross the person who trust and love you more than his because when worse comes to worst, that person won’t have anything to lose anymore.

Se Kyung was startled at first but what Seung Jo said didn’t stop her from apologizing.

Se Kyung:  I did wrong.  So…please don’t hurt yourself.  Don’t even try to handle it by yourself.  This is not your portion.  It’s mine.  The one who needs to go to hell is not you but me.

Seung Jo:  You…you ruined it all! (Then left)

It was all too painful to Se Kyung that she wasn’t able to help it—she let loose of all the pain she’s been hiding.  Then she suddenly remembered what Seung Jo told her once:  Even if I show you everything, if we can accept it all and embrace each other, I believe its love.  She rushed hoping she could still catch up on him but it was too late.  He was gone.

I think it is better that he’s at least showing that side of him.  In a way, he is giving himself the opportunity to unshackle some of that fury inside him.  He is saner in my eyes that time than he was earlier when he was all smiles like nothing happened.

She tried to get a hold of him and called him multiple times but he rejected her calls.  In the meantime, Seung Jo stopped his car and let go of the tears.  Poor thing! L L L I feel really bad for him.

When she couldn’t reach Seung Jo, Se Kyung called Dong Wook and requested him to make the call.  She didn’t really explain to him what exactly happened to the doctor friend was confused.

Now they’re both in the quest of finding him because he wasn’t answering his phone.  Not for long, everyone was looking for him, even Chairman Il Nam.  Seung Jo was supposed to attend a business meeting with his father and GN Fashion but he was nowhere to be found.

The Chairman was mad when he learned of what happened.  He blamed Se Kyung for not acting innocent and ordered her to do everything to find his son.

The incident was already reported to the proper authorities and the Chairman will now just have to patiently wait.  But his ire towards GN Fashion’s Team Leader, In Hwa, couldn’t.    The meeting already started but Seung Jo was nowhere.

The Chairman cut the meeting short and didn’t push through with the Loehman Outlet project.  He added that if GN Fashion would like to know the reason, In Hwa is the better person to explain it since she knew better.  In Hwa’s brother and father, especially her brother, are now belligerent towards her.  Oh but of course, she always has Yoon Joo as a scapegoat.  So she told them that she will reveal the truth when they all get home.

Yoon Joo’s mother-in-law came to their house.  Now, even the rest of the family is coming.  She knew what was going to happen.  She kept her poise but deep inside a storm is brewing.  Her mother-in-law was so mad at her; she spewed some seriously insulting words.  A lot of it was true, though.  All of it, she knew was coming.

In Hwa thought she was safe now.  But she wasn’t.  Contrary to what she expected, her dad was just as mad at her for having done such a lowly act of retaliation.  To cut the story short, he sees everything as business.  If the other party chose a different partner, it simply means, you lost a business deal.  Nothing more, nothing less.  Her mom tried to defend her but it was a waste because her father, obviously, was more influential.

Yoon Joo’s husband wanted to talk to her in private to he invited her to go to their room.  There the confrontation that she knew would one day happen happened.  He despised her for hiding her truth, her past and for putting in line In Hwa’s reputation just to save her spot in society; just to protect her status; just to stick to the family that gives her the life she has now.  Then he questioned her if he even really loved him.

Min Hyuk:  In this difficult and turbulent world, you just wanted someone to protect you.  Someone to protect you very securely.  I knew.  But it was just too revealing.  I saw too much of it.  (Then turned his back on her.  He only stopped when she started talking.)

Yoon Joo:  Just like that….  I wanted to stick by you? No.  I also did it to protect you.  To the person who protected me…I wanted to look good.  I wanted to do well.  To do well, struggled with all my mind and body…using all my strength…I, too…tried to protect you.

How much of what she said got through to him, it’s hard to say.  For now, she will have no choice but to face the consequences of her actions and decisions.

Her mother-in-law wanted the divorce proceedings to happen as soon as possible and just like in the supposed contract, she won’t get even a single cent from their family.  On the contrary, that’s not the priority of the patriarch.  He suggested prioritizing to rekindle to relationship with Royal Group and use Yoon Joo in the process.  Then he added that it won’t be too late to rid of her after that.  Her husband approved of the plan because at this point he couldn’t let go of things easily.

She received a call from Tommy Hong asking about Se Kyung.  All she told him was that everything is over for the three of them referring to Se Kyung, herself, and Tommy.  Tommy was speechless.

Se Kyung, on the other hand, didn’t give up on finding Seung Jo.  She went to the gallery where his painting was displayed hoping to find him there.  She was too late.  Seung Jo already left the gallery two hours ago.  She was so focused on Seung Jo that she almost got hit by a car.  I thought there was going to be hospital scenes and all.  I’m glad there wasn’t. J

She’s already desperate at this point.  Desperate and hopeless.  When finally Tommy Hong got a hold of her, all she said repeatedly was Seung Jo disappeared.  Tommy asked her twice where she was at and when he didn’t get any answer, he lost his patience and raised his voice on her.  I know that he started as a bad person but I really appreciate his being a big brother to Se Kyung.  But mostly because I’d like to think that his concern is because he would be like a brotherly character in this series.  Anyways, he found her at least.  He asked if she tried looking for Seung Jo everywhere.  Hmmm…at this point I was thinking, what if he’s just in Se Kyung’s house?  And at this point, I was finally seeing the Moon Geun Young I was missing in the previous episodes.  She is one good actress!

Tommy advised her to go home.  He reminded her that Seung Jo is the president of Artemis Korea so he can not disappear so easily.  That seemed to help a little.  But instead of going straight to her house, she went to Seung Jo’s house.  There she imagined the “him” that welcomed her that morning.  On his table she saw the drawing of the different places in Paris that he wanted them to visit.  Then she remembered the conversation she had with him.  She suspected that he flew to Paris and this suspicion was proven true by Secretary Moon (@ 10:50 p.m. flight to Paris).

She went straight to the airport and was able to get there just in time.  Thanks to Tommy for taking her there.  Just in time to grab a hold of Seung Jo’s hand and drag him out of line to clear things up with him.
Seung Jo was still really mad at her.  He said there is no way for them to be the same; that love can end; and that now, there is no Han Se Kyung in his life.  He tried to forget everything but she’s always there reminding him of the reality so he’s leaving.   Han Se Kyung didn’t just sit there and did nothing.  She’s walking the talk.  She told him before, she won’t go anywhere and she isn’t.  She gave him a good argument:  He can’t leave because he hasn’t seen all of her; the real her and if after seeing the real her, he can’t accept her, only then he can dump her and leave.  But for now, he can’t.  He showed her his real self.  Now, it’s her turn.
