Drama Review: 7th Grade Civil Servant Episode 6

7th Grade Civil Servant
Episode 6

“I’m sorry.”
“I followed you.”
“I couldn’t believe in you so I followed you.”
“You’re living the best out of your life.  But someone like me couldn’t believe in you.”
“I’m sorry about that.”

“I’m not feeling sorry about this.”

Female viewers sure were captivated by Joo Won”s lines towards the end of episode 5.  I read comments in youtube.com saying Joo Won was cute and they feel like squeezing his cheeks after that smile when he realized Seo Won wasn’t going opposed on him holding her hands.  Well that was just totally understandable and cute is probably an understatement.  This guy hasn’t even said I love you and the positive reaction of the drama fans are already through the roof.  What more when some really sizzling scenes were to happen?!
This drama is full of scenes that makes you laugh, worry, and feel frustrated about.  The frustration is not the negative type though.  The show maintains balance that it is really hard to hate a character.  This is the only show I watched that makes me appreciate even the villains in sense that their contribution in making the drama intense is unquestionably positive.  Even they have depths.  Even they make me feel willing to see things on their perspectives and their acting, powerful!
In this episode, it is apparent that Sun Mi is developing a liking towards Do-ha.  But just like any tomboy, self-reliant kind of girl, she maintains the subtlety of that feeling.  Once in a while she would insinuate something through her little comments here and there, but Do-ha is just too dense that he just couldn’t get it.  There was a part in this episode when Sun Mi drew a portrait of Do-ha while they’re on a mission to watch over Joo Man.  That’s when they were in the basement parking lot.  Do-ha, also seemed to have shown a concern when the criminal got a hold of Sun Mi and positioned a knife closed to her face.  He rather let go of the guy than see Sun Mi’s face get scarred.  Later she asked him why he did that and he just said because she will be more recognizable if she has a mark on her face.  Too bad.  Sure it wasn’t what she wanted to hear but who knows.  It could be the beginning of a good relationship.
In a lot of dramas, I think one of the reasons why viewers get tired watching them is the incorporation of too much clichés that don’t actually work either because the characters just don’t look good doing them or because there isn’t enough chemistry that the scenes just look forced.  You know when you’re watching and feel like the scene is just too corny for you to handle?  Something like that.  This drama, on the other hand, is just the opposite.  This is almost like the parody of clichés.  This episode especially, showed scenes that you thought would lead to a worn-out cliché [which will probably remind you of a hundred of dramas], but actually wrap up in hilarity or beguilement.

Just when you thought that when he would wipe the cream off the side of her mouth, she will be marveled by his gentleman behavior followed by visual effects like, I don’t know, hearts coming out of her eyes then her chicks would turn red or something like that.  But no.  Since this is not your ordinary drama and Seo Won is not your ordinary paranoid, she ended up twisting her arm and knocking him down the floor for everyone to see.  And because Gil-ro is not your ordinary romanticist, he complained like a child for everyone to hear claiming he’s embarrassed by what she did [but not by how he was acting—whining, that is] and continued to pursue her anyways.

Everything happened so quick that I didn’t have time to think what exactly happen.  I just found myself laughing until my tummy hurt.

And just when you thought that a scene when Gil-ro was confronting Seo Won about her real identity while wrestling her on her bed would turn into a steamy hot love scene, her parents arrived and grab Gil-ro by the hair.  Then there’s more.  Of course since it’s the end and since the writer has been consistent in leaving the viewers hanging at the end of each episode, Do-ha had to fell out of the closet Seo Won pushed him in [so Gil-ro doesn’t see him or else he will have an idea that she’s still connected to NIS].  And since the dad has two hands he might as well grab Do-ha by the hair and put the two guys under the red light while torturing them.  And amidst all these chaos, what is the mom to do?  She knew!  She pulled her daughter’s hair for two-timing?!!

Aside from the accidental parody of clichés, the undying sarcasm of Won Suk remains a winner of all sarcasm in K-drama world.  His sarcasm is funny, likeable, and most of all meaty!  It is meaty enough to push every button of the no-nonsense Young Soon.  And her reaction is just as powerful as her position in NIS.
I mentioned before that this drama is like a dish with all the right ingredients.  Because it has all the right ingredients, it is able to stand to its genre.  But every comedic scene if followed by another comedic scene minute after minute, at some point, you’ll get tired of it.  Suddenly, the hoopla is gone because you got used to it.  That’s when the dark side comes in handy.  There are dramatic scenes but those didn’t take over a good chunk of the episode.  So far it hasn’t happened yet and hopefully never at all.  Since this is partly detective drama in nature, there will be action and blood.  These facets only add up to the depth of the show instead of overpowering all the other ingredients in it.  All in all, this episode featured just the right amount of drama, comedy, sarcasm and romance.  Every week’s episodes are worth watching.
Now that Seo Won’s sneaking in Gil-ro’s office was discovered, this could lead to the exposure of at least her job or role in NIS.  It would be interesting to see how the NIS bosses would go around convincing the smart Gil-ro that Seo Won is not working for them.  But see, just like some of you [probably], I am also thinking, how would they explain the presence of Do-ha in her room?  They can’t really say they’re together as a couple since Seo Won admitted to Gil-ro that she doesn’t have a lover.  That’s actually the reason why the latter is now more confident in pursuing her.  He even told her that if she doesn’t like him now, he would make her like him—which reminds me of how charming this guy is!  How often can you land a guy like him?  Just like what Young Soon mentioned to Seo Won on the phone when she was with her blind date [while Seo Won was with Gil-ro at the café]: “Are you trying to flaunt it off to me now?  Hey, you want to try putting yourself into my shoes? You think a guy like Gil-ro is very common?  Is he short, old or ill-mannered?  Or is he bald?!!!  What’s so bad about him?  If I were you, I’d just make him stay.  Make him stay with me.  I’ll reprimand you if you were to whine in front of me again.  You heard me?”  That was a total stupefaction!  This woman is so feisty and she will be when and where she wants tom; and there is no winning over her unless you can you can spell sarcasm the way Won Suk does.

All I can say now is, I can’t wait to watch the next episode and I hope Gil-ro’s dad wouldn’t get deeply involve in Mi-rae’s organization.  I enjoyed every minute of this show.
This review may not be long but sometimes, this is all that’s needed and we can just let the show do the talking for us.  Thank you for reading!!!
