Drama Review: That Winter, The Wind Blows Episode 1

That Winter, The Wind Blows
Episode 1

Oh Young
Song Hye Gyo is back in this intense drama and once again, she left me in awe of both her beauty and talent.  She’s the blind heir, Oh Young, of a big conglomerate, PL group.  Her parents separated when she was six which also cause her to grow up away from her mom and only brother.  After so many years, her dad fell ill and eventually died—if only the secretary that her dad trusted more than his own daughter did something when the alarm went off [in the chairman’s room].  It was the same time when she left their mansion to look for her brother which unfortunately was killed in a car accident while running after his Hyung whom he shared the same name—Oh Soo.

Oh Soo
Oh Soo was abandoned by his own mother under a tree in front of an orphanage.  He grew up not having any dreams and living like a drifter.  He had a girlfriend that died in a motorcycle accident that until now he felt guilty about.  As if his way of paying her back, he maintained a relationship with her younger sister who is always grumpy at him.  Despite that, he continued to treat her well.  At present he has a friend Park Jin Sung who has always been loyal to him even after he lost everything since So Ra—one of those girls he played with took him seriously and when he dumped her, she screwed him in the best possible way she could to the point of him losing everything and now, having to con a blind lady acting like her estranged brother.  This blind lady is Oh Young—his ticket to saving his ass from getting buried 6 feet under the ground by the club owner whom So Ra stole 70 million won to frame Oh Soo.
Park Jin Sung

Moon Hee Seon
In this complicated world of all sorts of evil, betrayal, and masquerade, two people will be caught entangled with each other in an odd, dark way.

So Ra
Some of the casts are new to me, I must admit.  This is my first time to see the lead actor in this drama.  Physically, he does look good next to Hye Gyo and of course fans missed Kim Bum.  But after watching the first episode, I was already taken by this drama deep into its heart and soul that I can’t help but look beyond the celebrities.  The story is captivating.  At times, it feels slow but riveting.  This reminds me of the first Korean dramas I have seen before like Stairway to Heaven, Jewel in the Palace, and the likes.  However, because of its nature, I wouldn’t advice anyone watching this after a stressful day at work because just the site of the secretary’s face will probably make your blood boil.  She is a snake—silent but deadly!

Wang Hye Ji-- the late Chairman's secretary
The first episode presented the premise to Oh Soo’s biggest conflict—money!  His life is like a torn paper whose pieces were blown by the wind in all direction. His life is all over the place and he doesn’t really intend to put them together.  But one thing for sure, he wants to live.  This time the only way is Oh Young.  Just like what Euripides said, “Nothing has more strength than dire necessity.”

This also presented a glimpse of why Oh Young became cold like she is now.  She is aware that she is surrounded by people she couldn’t trust.  For one the very person whom her late father trusted more than anyone caused her family to be divided.  This story is not your pink clouds, marshmallows and unicorn kind of love story.  This is more like a story where Snow White’s Evil Queen Stepmother and the witch in Hansel and Gretel are working together to spread darkness all over OZ—Dark…sad…but hopefully a happy ending.
